“I used to play basketball all the time. I played like 6 times a week. I played sports all my life. Before I got into music, I played basketball, ran cross country and did track. I hate running now. I want to get back into it, but it’s hard to find that motivation. Basketball has always been my favorite physical activity. It’s a good workout. 6 years ago, I got done touring with this band I was with for 5 years and decided to go back to college in Milwaukee. I ended up trying out for the basketball team. I made the team. I was one of the first ones picked who walked on, so I was super excited. I was the old guy on the team running with all these young guys from Milwaukee. It was 2 games into the season and I tore my ACL in practice. That ended that whole experience. I got to know the coach really well. He pushed me really hard and got me playing like I used to back in high school, so it was tough when it ended so abruptly. When I tore it, I remember thinking and wondering if I would ever be able to run and jump like I used to because the recovery is a long process. It took a while to get to the point where I could put pressure on it. I just turned 31, so taking care of my health is more on my mind now. When I’m on the road, I try to workout as much as I can. I want to be able to maintain it. I don’t ever want to get to the point where I let myself go. I want to be able to play basketball and not get too tired where I have to quit.”
