“When I was working out at the YMCA for a short period of time, I was power lifting. That went really well until I reached my limit. I wound up with a bilateral inguinal hernia. I herniated both sides laterally, which wound up being a 5 inch incision on each side. Had the surgery. The recovery was supposed to be 1-2 weeks but the surgeon said that the right side was way more strained than she had initially thought. That elongated the recovery to 6-8 weeks. I was down and out and was told not to power lift anymore. So after that happened, I went reverse and my wife and I started running and doing races. I went from a power lifter to a runner in between seasons. I ditched 30 pounds. We did about 4 or 5 races. I was feeling great. But then I was playing basketball 3 days a week and one morning I went up for a rebound and my foot got caught on a guys high tops and twisted it. It didn’t break but I really messed it up. So I stopped running and playing basketball. So now, I haven’t been working out as much as I should. However, lately I’ve been able to bike to and from work, which is around 7 miles a day. I want to get back into a solid routine. I have to figure out what’s not going to hurt me and what I can do to workout but not take time away from my wife and kids at the same time.”
