“When I was in my early 30’s, I was overweight and I was a heavy smoker. One day, I decided I’m going to quit smoking and start running, so I did. The first day I could run about a quarter mile without throwing up. A year later, I ran my first marathon. For 30 years, I was a runner. I ran a lot of marathons. I used to run everyday at noon. For several years, I ran everyday. In fact, one time, I totaled it up. I’m almost 2 times around the earth. Almost 50,000 miles running. I never had a bit of trouble with running. I think distance running cures a lot of things. If you have a headache, go out for a run, it will disappear. I even think it helps colds. I don’t know many distance runners that aren’t pretty positive people. I used to play a lot of tennis and I think you get more knee problems from basketball and tennis where you’re starting and stopping and changing directions. I think the human body is meant to run straight ahead. Now as I’ve gotten in my mid 70’s, I still do my aerobics. I still do some of it in the summer, but you know, when you get in your mid 70’s you start taking more falls. I don’t mind breaking an arm here or there, I’ve broken a lot of bones, but I don’t want to break a hip. I put in an hour and a half on the stationary bike and I usually lift weights for 35 minutes in the morning. 2 hours of that and then I walk in the afternoon. I would like to live a long time, and I’m not going to do that if I don’t keep my health up. You have to keep your mind active. I’ve been working on French for 2 ½ years. I put a couple of hours into that every day. You can’t sit around. Take the steps rather than the elevator. I think having a good mental attitude, a good diet, a good exercise regimen and mental activity is the key to everything.”
