“For 31 years, I’ve kept the same workout routine. When I first moved to Eau Claire, I would go down to the YMCA during my lunch break. It was convenient because it was right by City Hall, where I work. Also, it was nice because my children went to daycare there, so not only was it a chance for me to workout, it was a chance for me to drop in and see my kids during the day. Dedicating my lunch hour to working out helps me stay mentally alert and if I get it in, I can dedicate the rest of my time for my family and my professional life. I lift weights and I run. I have two groups I’ve been doing that with for a very long time. I workout daily. I have to. It keeps me centered. It relieves stress. I have a pretty high profile job, so going at noon helps break up the day. I really enjoy working out. When I run, I like it. When I’m lifting, I like it. When I’m hiking, I like it. It has always been a peaceful thing for me. As I’ve aged, I’ve learned to modify what I’m doing. I have to stretch more. I’ve had to change my diet. I’m married to a dietician, which is good. She keeps me on the straight and narrow. I just want to be healthy. Working out is so important to me. I never want to get to the point where I can’t do things. I would go crazy if I couldn’t. Also, I want to be around if I ever have grandkids and I want to be healthy enough to walk around with them.”
